This project combines digital and natural materials into a single piece of furniture. The parameters required that I must find a naturally shaped, found, and un-milled material for one piece of the composition. The other pieces of the composition must be digitally produced in some way.
Bamboo was found in a scrap pile at another wood shop on the Iowa State campus.
The bamboo was cleaned and then measured and cut roughly to the desired height.
The cut bamboo was arranged on a circle the same size to determine the best arrangement of the center pieces in terms of stability and aesthetic .
I then traced the outline of the arrangement so it could be digitized and used with the CNC router later in the project.
The plywood base pieces were cut out on a CNC.
I cut three of the same shapes, each slightly larger than the last, creating a staggered effect.
The plywood base was stacked and glued.
Once the base was glued the bamboo was secured to the plywood with resin.
